This article explains how to move a connected domain to another project, your public profile, or another Readymag account. It also covers moving a domain to a different registrar.
Moving a domain to another project
To move your domain to a specific project, open the project’s Domain tab and enter your domain name. You’ll see a notification informing you that the domain is already mapped to another project on your profile. Click Switch to current project to move it to this project.
Moving a domain to your profile
The Public Profile feature is available on the Freelancer, Advanced (Business), and Extra plans.
To move your domain to your public profile, open your account settings and scroll down to the Public Profile section. Enter your domain and click Test. You’ll see a notification informing you that the domain is mapped to one of your projects. Click Connect to map it to your profile.
Connecting your domain to your profile automatically links your existing project. Read this article for more information.
Moving a domain to another account
A domain can only be used by one user at a time. To use a connected domain with a project in another account, follow these steps:
-
Unmap the domain from the original project. Find the project currently using the domain and open its settings. Go to the Domain tab and click Unmap.
-
Remove the existing TXT record. The verification record is unique to each user, so you have to remove the existing record before another Readymag user can add a new one with the verification key linked to their account. You can remove the record through your domain registrar.
In your registrar’s DNS panel, find and remove the existing TXT record. For example:
-
Connect the domain to the new project. In the other Readymag account, find the project you want to connect the domain to. Open its settings and select the Domain tab. Click Test to get a new verification key:
-
Add a new TXT record. The TXT record linked to the previous user was removed in step 2. Now, add a new TXT record with the verification key you just copied. In your registrar’s DNS panel, it should look similar to this:
-
Wait for a while, then test the domain. DNS changes usually take a few minutes to propagate, but this can take up to 72 hours depending on your registrar. Once they’ve propagated, return to the Domain tab and click Test again. When the Connect button appears, click it to complete the process.

Moving a domain to another registrar
Readymag doesn’t manage domains directly. Domain transfers take place outside our platform. If you want to transfer ownership of a domain you purchased, contact your current domain provider. They can help you move it to another registrar.
FAQs
Will my site go offline while I move the domain? Is there any downtime?
Moving a domain between projects in the same account is nearly instant. Moving it to another account can cause a short interruption while the domain is unmapped and the new TXT record propagates. This can take a few minutes or up to 72 hours. You can check TXT record propagation with a tool like DNSchecker.org. Once the record has propagated, you can connect the domain.
What happens to the old project when its domain is moved or unmapped? Is it still available at its readymag.website link?
The old project isn’t deleted. It stops appearing at your domain, but it remains available at its default Readymag link if it’s published.
Does the SSL certificate carry over? How long does it take to work on the new project?
The certificate isn’t transferred. A new one is issued once you connect the domain to the new project. This process is almost instant.
Why does the “Test” button keep failing? What should I do if it still fails after 72 hours?
If the test still fails after 72 hours, follow these troubleshooting steps. If the issue continues, contact support by email or chat. Include your domain name and a screenshot of your DNS records so the team can check them.
I can’t find the old project that’s using my domain, or I no longer have access to that account. How can I free up the domain?
To find projects with connected domains in your account, go to your projects and select the With domains filter in the top-left corner. Then find the project and disconnect the domain.
If you no longer have access to the account using the domain, contact support by email or chat so the team can help verify the situation.
The previous owner’s account was deleted or is inactive. Can support release the domain?
We can’t access the content of users’ projects, but our support team can review account settings such as billing and plan details. If you’re the account owner, support can guide you through disconnecting the domain.
If the account has been deleted, its information and projects are permanently removed and the domain is no longer connected to anything. You can remove the DNS records through your domain registrar’s dashboard.
Can I transfer a project and its domain to another account in one step?
No. A domain doesn’t move when you copy a project to another account. You need to disconnect the domain from the original project and connect it to the new copy. See this article for more information about transferring a project.
Can I move a domain between accounts without removing the TXT record first?
No. The verification record is unique to each user, so you have to remove the old record before adding the new account’s key and connecting the domain.
Can one account use the same domain for multiple projects, or use subdomains for different projects?
A domain can be mapped to only one place at a time, so you can’t connect it to several projects separately. However, if you map it to your public profile, all of your published projects are served under that domain. Subdomains, such as portfolio.yoursite.com, are generally treated as separate domains, so each can point to a different project. See the Additional Configurations section of this article for instructions on setting up a subdomain.
Do the A record or CNAME settings need to change, or only the TXT record?
When moving a domain between accounts, you only need to replace the TXT record. If the domain remains pointed to Readymag, the A record and CNAME don’t need to change.
Where can I find the DNS panel in GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains/Squarespace, Cloudflare, or another registrar?
Your registrar is the company you bought your domain from. Log in to its website to find the DNS panel. Readymag can’t access it. See this article for instructions for some popular registrars. If your registrar isn’t listed, check its support guides or contact its support team.
Does moving a domain require a paid plan?
Yes, connecting a custom domain is a paid feature. The account with the project you want to connect the domain to requires a paid subscription.
